A hollow is an area of refuge carved out of the hedge by a changeling to provide a measure of safety and security when living in the hedge. It also provides a changeling with a personal, private location they can retreat to when necessary.
Due to the need to provide balance, a changeling will find themselves needing to depend on the Haven or their own hollow at least half of the time.
A hollow is often a cave or other natural structure, but may be dug out by hand, or may be an above-ground area surrounded by securely entangled hedge.
Game Mechanics
New players receive “Hollow 1” for free, as it provides for the absolute basic needs of a changeling when they leave the Hedge. Further dots can be purchased with upgrade points.
The hollow itself is discovered between the first and second game for the character. The hollow thus becomes available during the character’s second game in play.
Hollow has the following levels:
- At Level 1, you own a small one room shelter inside the hedge. It has the basics of life. You own something bed like, a cooking fire, and a few small things to spruce up your sad little cave.
- At Level 2, It took quite a while but you dug out another room in your hollow. Your main room is a bit nicer. You might have a proper bed or something. Your hollow is also safer. Anyone trying to find your hollow suffers a -1 penalty to their pull and anyone trying to break into your hollow suffers a similar -1 penalty. Since you have the basics of life sorted out in your first room it is now time to expand into something more special. Pick one of the special rooms listed below for your second room. Your special room gives you a +1 bonus to pulls associated with its function if applicable.
- At Level 3, You have added another special room to your hollow. Pick another room from the list above under level 2. Your main room is much nicer. Your hollow is now even safer. Anyone trying to find your hollow suffers a -2 penalty to their pull and anyone trying to break into your hollow suffers a similar -2 penalty.
